Electrical switchgear engineers NOJA Power today announces details of a presentation given by electrical engineer Martin van der Linde, Sales Engineer – Australia and Pacific with NOJA Power, at the prestigious Australian Protection Symposium (APS), the country’s premier event for electricity transmission and distribution professionals.
The presentation highlighted how engineers can easily leverage the extensive capabilities of modern Automatic Circuit Reclosers (ACR or “auto recloser”), such as NOJA Power’s OSM series, to maximise the return on investment from these network assets. The presentation set out to demonstrate that implementing the additional functionality of an ACR does not require large engineering resource or the development of complex algorithms.
Now in its ninth year, the APS is seen as Australia’s premier electricity network protection gathering. The event attracts those involved in the electrical transmission and distribution industry, especially in protection. This year’s edition of APS took place during mid-August at the Powerhouse Museum, Darling Harbour, Sydney, and comprised a series of 20-minute presentations providing the speakers with the opportunity to share first-hand experiences from Australia and around the globe. The event also included a panel discussion and a Q&A session. All presented papers were then made available in the APS proceedings. (See “About the Australian Protection Symposium” below.)
NOJA Power’s presentation addressed two key examples of how an ACR’s extensive functionality can help utilities extract more value from their distribution automation and protection assets in an Australian context. The first example described how adapting an ACR’s reclose sequence can help mitigate bushfires in the high-risk season. In normal use, an ACR recloses four times to lockout in order to clear a fault while minimising customer disruption. But such a sequence increases the risk of ignition at the site of the fault during high bushfire risk periods. The presentation described how system controllers could easily and remotely limit the reclose sequence to just two operations before lockout––decreasing the ignition risk––without having to manipulate ACR settings.
The second example of the ACR’s functionality described how new developments enable comprehensive power quality monitoring. NOJA Power’s OSM series ACRs can now measure harmonic distortion, interruptions, and sags & swells, helping to prevent power contamination damaging assets and interrupting the supply. The power quality information is easily available from the OSM series ACR’s associated RC10 control and communications cubicle via the display for on-site technicians, or remotely accessible for staff based at a distant location. The ACR’s power quality measurement tool is supplied as standard and, when fully utilised, significantly increases the asset’s value.
“Engineers can be put off exercising the full capabilities of network assets such as NOJA Power’s ACRs by the apparent complexities of implementing schemes beyond simple protection,” explains Neil O’Sullivan, NOJA Power’s Managing Director. “However, our engineers have worked hard to come up with software that makes it straightforward to access the wide range of functionality that modern ACRs offer and helps utilities get much more from their assets.
“Speaking at APS provided the perfect opportunity for NOJA Power to present a paper explaining how protection engineers can do this – even remotely. Now the paper is publicly available so that all interested parties can find out how easy it is for them to embrace all of the capabilities of an auto-recloser.”
NOJA Power’s OSM series ACRs are fundamental elements of smart grids and provide a comprehensive suite of automation and protection features. The ACRs perform voltage measurements on all six bushings, current measurement on all three phases, offer bidirectional protection and provide extensive power quality and data logging capability. The units are contained in a stainless steel enclosure that forms the only solid dielectric unit with controlled internal arc fault venting on the market. The OSM series has been fully type-tested by independent laboratory KEMA in the Netherlands to ensure long life and reliability under the harshest environmental conditions. The RC10 controller is a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)-ready controller that provides a directional overcurrent, earth fault and sensitive earth fault relay, auto reclosing relay, instantaneous metering, event log, demand logger and remote terminal unit (RTU) for remote control in a single package.
